According to WebMD a new study found that low vitamin D levels may contribute to the development of Type 2 Diabetes (Boyles, 2011). This study compared children in Texas; children considered obese and those under the obese weight.  The findings showed that those that were obese had lower levels of Vitamin D. In fact, abnormal glucose metabolism and blood pressure were more predominate in the obese children.

Vitamin D is created by the body and sun exposure is necessary for the body to manufacture this vitamin.  Spending 10-15 minutes outdoors is all it take for most people to produce the right amount of D.  This is harder to do than one might think… Think of your own day.  Was the only time you were outside was walking from and to your car?  And, not to mention Mother Nature’s part of the equation. 

More and more I am hearing of conventional doctors prescribing large amounts of D to help with tiredness and to optimize the body’s many functions.  This study shows a direct correlation between the levels of D and the risk of Diabetes.

 A healthy diet, physical activity and vitamin D all play a role in preventing Diabetes and staying a healthy weight for our body frame.

I implore you to take a look at your lifestyle and decide if you are getting enough vitamin D.
