We have all heard of the many benefits of calcium especially for increasing bone density and preventing osteoporosis.  And that the consumption of Vitamin D increases the body's absorption of calcium. A new Standford study shows that it also cuts the chance of melanoma in half for high risk women.

Melanoma is a life-threatening skin cancer that affects 1 of 50 of us.  It is caused by the accidental sun burns and amount you were in the sun as a child.  Calcium and D can help prevent the cancer.  The study followed 36,000 women for seven years; half the women took Calcium and D and the other half a placebo.  They found that it cuts melanoma incidence by 57%. For the first time vitamins provided positive cancer-reducing effects.

This may be because of the fact that vitamin D controls how quickly cells reproduce. It effects the non-skeletal cells and may decrease or even prevent the rate in which cancer spreads.

While we are all taking precautions in the sun now more than ever like wearing hats, using sunscreen and staying in the shade or indoors between 10-2 we have all had a burn or two.  Maybe adding calcium and D into your regime will help protect you from melanoma.
