Sports Drinks for Kids?

The national obesity rate of children has increased dramatically in
the past 20 years and is showing no signs of decreasing.  For the first time ever this generation of kids will not outlive their parents. Dependency on processed foods, an increase in highly-sugared beverages and more time spent indoors may all contribute to these hard facts.

High sugar/processed foods are everywhere.  My 8 year old daughter played softball and while this is a sport-she got to bat twice and was not busy in the outfield.   At the end of every game there was not only a Gatorade provided but a sugary snack.  I don’t believe that she burned enough calories to need to replenish her electrolytes (with the Gatorade) and no amount of playing time justified a pre-packaged marshmallow rice krispie treat.

But, it’s a treat for them or it’s a special occasion or it’s a birthday…we need to help our kids make better choices by only offering good choices.  This is especially true when we are tying food/drink rewards to playing sports.
The American Academy of Pediatrics has recently conducted a clinical report citing the ill effects of sports drinks and energy drinks consumed by adolescents and children.  Not only are the ingredients in these beverages artificial but the amount of caffeine and sugar is staggering.  Sports drinks were developed to replace minerals and electrolytes lost through exercise for endurance athletes.  The only time that sports drinks may be necessary is after an hour of intense, physical activity. Energy drinks that can have up to three times the amount of caffeine and up to 14 tsp of sugar were clearly developed for adults (www.healthychildren.org).

    Water is best for children
; many of these sports and energy drinks are loaded with empty calories that are unnecessary for most of even the most active children.  The high calorie drinks consumed with meals, at soccer games and birthday parties are a cause for our nations' high obesity levels in children.  Finding healthy alternatives when kids want something other than water can be done but finding an alternative with natural ingredients and low sugar is essential.

Cell EnerG is one of those alternatives that a parent can feel good about offering to their children.  This orange-flavored hydrogenating drink mix is naturally sweetened with xylitol and stevia having only 14 calories per serving.  In addition it is full of antioxidants, vitamin C, D3, calcium and the trace minerals our bodies need to replenish and function optimally.
