How to Test your pH

Testing your own pH level

Here’s how: pH test kits come with complete, easily-followed directions. The pH test is done by dipping a small piece of pH paper (from health food store) into saliva (or urine) for 3-5 seconds. Exposing the strip of pH paper to saliva or urine changes its color, easily read by comparing with the color scale included.

·        Testing your saliva: First thing in the morning, before brushing your teeth, drinking anything, eating breakfast, even chewing gum; or at least 2 hours after eating or drinking. Spit a small amount of saliva in a plastic spoon, dip the strip; read immediately! Optimal for saliva is 7.5; a normal slightly alkaline body.

·        Testing your urine: first thing in the morning. Fill a small cup with urine, or dip mid-stream. Dip strip into the urine; read immediately. Optimal reading is about 6.5; a normal slightly acid body.

Both the saliva and urine readings should remain constant. And, if they do so, that means your pH levels appear to be fine. If either of the readings begins to creep upward, it might be well to add a trifle more protein to your diet, such as fish, eggs and cheese, etc., to help bring the readings back to your normal readings.

If either of your readings begin to slide downward, a dietary change that includes more fresh vegetables and fruit is indicated, which should help bring the readings up to normal again. Remember, all sugary and processed foods, including soft drinks, either regular or diet, work against an ideal pH.
