Facts Up Front is a voluntary initiative for manufacturers to label their products with a clear grid showing calories, fiber, sodium, sugar and fat of the product. If you don’t have the time or knowledge to evaluate ingredients list and can be sold on banners across the packaged foods that say “multi-grain” or “low sugar” the FDA may be endorsing a nutrient labeling system to help you. While the government may not be ready to admit it’s not the high fat/ high carb diet that gives us the “Highest Rate of Obesity” but it's the fake ingredients and cheap unhealthy foodsthat are increasing our waistlines and our kids waistlines.
I think it will be difficult to see if this extra labeling will help the americans change their eating habits or not. Maybe having some of the nutrition (or lack of) visible will encourage those to choose healthier choices. Or, maybe they will continue to be hooked to the artificial additives in the junk food they eat and will not be swayed to eat better or eat a healthier junk food. The following is an example of this new labeling system from www.factsupfront.comWhat to Look For
While this endorsed by Michelle Obama and is aligned to the FDA and Department of Agriculture when will we see the government choose to fund healthy ingredients rather than genetically modified ones? This too will be a band-aid for the root problem of the cheapest ingredients produced are also the least healthy for us. Urging the government to increase spending for small farms, and organic ranches versus funding genetically modified, multi-billion dollar farms of soy and corn.
Look for the Facts Up Front in the stores this year and let me know what your thoughts are.
