Americans Sugar Fix

Americans’ addiction to sugar is demonstrated by what products are currently on the grocery store shelves today. Not only are these foods packing on the calories for adults and children we are depleting our body’s supply of vitamins and minerals.

Finding a product on the shelves without some type of sugar is difficult. To be an educated consumer you need to know what sugar can be labeled as. Below are some of the sugars added to our processed goods:

Agave nectar, Brown sugar, Cane crystals, Cane sugar, Corn sweetener, Corn syrup,Crystalline fructose, Dextrose, Evaporated cane juice, Fructose, Fruit juice concentrates, Glucose, High-fructose corn syrup, Honey, Lactose,  Maltose,  Malt syrup, Molasses, Raw sugar, Sucrose, SugarSyrup*

Not every sugar should be looked at the same.  For example naturally occurring sugars that are in milk and fruit are superior to high-processed, genetically modified HFCS. Looking for the healthiest form of sugar in products will help your body’s wellness but the actual amount consumed daily is the real problem. According to the American Heart Association men should consume 9 tsp of sugar per day and women should have 6 tsp. per day.

For measuring purposes 4 grams of sugar on the ingredient list is equivalent to 1 tsp of sugar.  A “healthy” but sweetened box of cereal will typically have 12 grams of sugar per serving. The means in ½ cup or ¾ cup sugar without milk you are eating 3 tsp of sugar.  Starting your day eating 1/3 of you sugar intake for men and ½ for women is probably not going to keep you at the recommended

Recently there has been some talk of the FDA regulating American’s sugar intake by labeling processed foods accordingly.  How do you feel about that-is is another big brother tactic or is it a necessity to educate Americans on what they are eating?
